Basenjis are muscular, athletic dogs. They have a short, fine coat that comes in pure black, copper, red, chestnut red, or tricolor in combinations of black, tan and white, or black, brindle and white. The dog has one extremely unique feature; it doesn't bark. Rather, it makes more of a yodel sound. It will also howl and growl. They are also known as Zande dog, Congo dog, Ango angari, African barkless dog, and African bush dog.

Origin[]

Amazingly, the first traces of a dog similar to a Basenji can be found in ancient Egyptian tombs and wall drawings. It was first introduced in England, in 1937. The English exported it all over the world. Africans used them as a guide in the forest and to signal warnings when dangerous animals approached. They also pointed and retrieved small game and drove some prey into nets. They were first recognized by the AKC is 1944.

Basejis are affectionate, energetic, curious, alert dogs. It loves to play. It is extremely intelligent and is very easily trained. It is good with children as long as they can display a leadership ability. It's strong prey drive make it untrustable with non-canine animals. It is somewhat reserved but still form strong bonds with humans. They need to be socialized well. They love to chew so to avoid destruction of your home, they will need many toys. Beware, it likes to climb and can easily make it over wire fences. Barking won't be a problem as it is more of a yodeler. You will also find it cleans itself much like a cat does. They need a lot of mental and physical stimulation.

Height Males: 16-17 in. Females: 15-16 in.

Grooming Since the breed grooms itself, it has no smell and requires little grooming. Makes a good dog for people with allergies. Minimal shedding.
